Music for the 10:00 am service on Sunday mornings draws from the rich musical contributions of many peoples and traditions. We sing beloved hymns from The Hymnal 1982, as well as many written during the mid-20th century. Spirituals, gospel music, and other American folk songs form a substantial part of our weekly music through Lift Every Voice and Sing II: An African American Hymnal (published 1993). Another source we frequently use is Wonder, Love, and Praise: A Supplement to the Hymnal 1982 (published 1997), which includes hymns and service music with inclusive language texts, hymns in languages other than English, and hymns written after The Hymnal 1982 was published. For music written by, for, and about women, we turn to Voices Found (published 2003).
On any given Sunday, you are invited to sing hymns that may span four or more centuries and several cultures, from “O come, o come Emmanuel,” “A Mighty Fortress is our God,” and “Let all Mortal Flesh keep Silence” to “This is the day that the Lord has made,” “Jesu, Jesu, fill us with your love,” and “We are marching in the light of God”. We sing music drawn from Celtic traditions and Taizé such as “Love Divine, all Loves Excelling” and “Ubi caritas”, as well as new favorite hymns like “We all are one in mission” and “Will you come and follow me if I but call your name?” Our parish musicians, “Fearless Love” often accompany us with guitar and percussion instruments
when we sing songs such as “Alleluia, alleluia, give thanks to the risen Lord,” “I am the bread of life,” and “Come and See” (written by the men of Cursillo 49).
Our talented volunteer choir members lead the music at the 10 AM service, sing anthems twice a month, and provide special music for major services such as Advent Lessons and Carols, Christmas Eve, and Easter. The choir of St. Andrew's is open to all who wish to enhance the worship experience through music. Rehearsals are held on Thursdays from 7-8:30 PM and 9-9:45 AM on Sundays from Labor Day through the month of July.
The young people of St. Andrew’s also contribute special music approximately three times throughout the church year.
In addition, we are happy to support music throughout our Encinitas community. Numerous performing organizations rehearse and give concerts in our space, such as the Tremble Clefs, the Roger Anderson Chorale, Sorelle, and I Palpiti, and touring groups such as The Rose Ensemble have enriched our Sunday morning services.
